Katy Carr can hardly believe it when she is invited to spend a whole year in Europe with Mrs Ashe and Amy. Although a year seems like a long time away from her beloved family, living in the small American town of Burnet, Katy embarks enthusiastically on her greatest adventure. This charming story, first published in 1886, is the third of Susan Coolidge’s three hugely popular Katy books.

Not for me: What Katy Did Next

⚠️ Spoilers: minor plot detail mentioned below. Mixed feelings on What Katy Did Next, but I can see why people love it. The ending resolves fast compared to how much it builds up. The pacing stays moving and the chapters end on good beats. There’s a specific turning point late in the book that changes the tone hard — that moment will make or break it for you. Overall, I’d recommend it to the right reader.

Didn’t work for me: What Katy Did Next

I went into What Katy Did Next with pretty normal expectations and it surprised me. The ending resolves fast compared to how much it builds up. I’d still read more from this author even with the flaws.

What Katy Did Next is the kind of book that hooks you early if you like its vibe. The atmosphere is the standout — it’s easy to sink into. A couple of sections could have been trimmed without losing anything. Overall, I’d recommend it to the right reader.
