John Steinbeck’s classic novella follows an unlikely pair: George is “small and quick and dark of face”; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet together they have formed a family, clinging to each other in the face of loneliness, and alienation, and hardship.
Laborers in California’s dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations of a flirtatious woman, nor predict the consequences of Lennie’s unswerving obedience to the things George taught him.

Mixed feelings: Of Mice and Men
Mixed feelings on Of Mice and Men, but I can see why people love it. Characters feel distinct, and the dialogue reads naturally. The ending resolves fast compared to how much it builds up. If you’re on the fence, try a sample — you’ll know quickly.

Mixed feelings: Of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men has a strong core idea — the execution mostly works. The pacing stays moving and the chapters end on good beats. The middle drags and repeats the same tension a bit too long. If you’re on the fence, try a sample — you’ll know quickly.

Really enjoyed: Of Mice and Men
⚠️ Spoilers: minor plot detail mentioned below. Mixed feelings on Of Mice and Men, but I can see why people love it. There are a few scenes that genuinely hit emotionally. There’s a specific turning point late in the book that changes the tone hard — that moment will make or break it for you. Not perfect, but it did enough to keep me turning pages.

Not for me: Of Mice and Men
I went into Of Mice and Men with pretty normal expectations and it surprised me. The ending resolves fast compared to how much it builds up. Characters feel distinct, and the dialogue reads naturally. I’d still read more from this author even with the flaws.
