They are always plotting and scheming with murderous, bloodthirsty thoughts – and they hate children. The Grand High Witch hates children most of all and plans to make every single one of YOU disappear. Only one boy and his grandmother can stop her, but if their plan fails the Grand High Witch will frizzle them like fritters, and then what . . . ?

Mixed feelings: The Witches

The Witches is the kind of book that hooks you early if you like its vibe. The atmosphere is the standout — it’s easy to sink into. The middle drags and repeats the same tension a bit too long. Overall, I’d recommend it to the right reader.

Didn’t work for me: The Witches

⚠️ Spoilers: minor plot detail mentioned below. The Witches has a strong core idea — the execution mostly works. The ending resolves fast compared to how much it builds up. There’s a specific turning point late in the book that changes the tone hard — that moment will make or break it for you. Overall, I’d recommend it to the right reader.

Mixed feelings: The Witches

I went into The Witches with pretty normal expectations and it surprised me. There are a few scenes that genuinely hit emotionally. The middle drags and repeats the same tension a bit too long. Not perfect, but it did enough to keep me turning pages.
